About Our Surroundings

We have some of the most beautiful surroundings here in the Ozarks. We have one of the worlds best trout river, The Little Red River, just about 200 feet from our front door. Trout fishermen come from all over the world to fish the Little Red, and enjoy it tremendously. The John F. Kennedy Dam is located here. It opened in 1963 and at the time President Kennedy was here during the dedication of the dam, along with his family.

Greers Ferry Lake is one of the most beautiful lakes in Arkansas. We take the grandchildren there during the summer and drive out to just sit and talk during colder months. It is indeed a beautiful, clean, fun lake to be close to. During the month of July, usually around the 4th or so, the City puts on the Cardboard Boat Races in which contestants make boats from cardboard and sails them or tries, most of which sink. It's a fun time for everyone and it always draws a large crowd.

This picture was taken of the lake at sunset by standing in one of the wooded areas that surrounds the lake and taking the picture. There are many Arkansas state parks and Corp of Engineer parks around the lake to accommodate the many visitors that come during the camping season. Visitors come from March through September, and sometimes into October depending on the weather.

Heber Springs all sorts of activities that they may want to do. There are hiking trails, biking trails, and wooded areas in which to explore. Heber Springs offers almost any type of recreation desired, with costs incurred to the visitor, minimal.

Greatness of a person is not measured by riches
Real importance lies in what the heart truly wishes
Accomplishing big things without love is useless
Continuous blessings when wasted become pointless
Enhancing one's wealth is not our sole dream I guess.

Boldness of character is not a guarantee
Right thing is made if applied wisely to see
A better future that secures good retirement
True happiness is not living in too much luxuries
Overwhelming zest is the freedom from worries.

Resources that we share for sake of charity
will be marked as gesture of good quality
that is required of those who are Godly.
I found this cute poem and thought it described Glen to a tee.

'RETIREMENT AIN'T WHAT IT USED TO BE'

The day that I've been waiting for

has finally arrived.

Ain't no more early to bed

nor early to arise.

I still set the alarm clock

just so that I can shut the ** thing off.

But I gotta get a parttime job,

'cause my wife is starting to sound

too much like my old boss.

She's got a 'Honey Do' list

that's longer than your arm.

So I think I'm gonna love to hear

the sound of that alarm.

I found this article and thought it was worth reading, again and again. Now this would be the life. Hey Glen! What do you think honey--should we do this?

The Retirement Cruise
-- Author Unknown

About 2 years ago my friend and I were on a cruise through the western Mediterranean aboard a Princess liner. At dinner we noticed an elderly lady sitting alone along the rail of the grand stairway in the main dining room.

I also noticed that all the staff, ships officers, waiters, busboys, etc., all seemed very familiar with this lady. I asked our waiter who the lady was, expecting to be told she owned the line, but he said he only knew that she had been on board for the last four cruises... back to back.

As we left the dining room one evening I caught her eye and stopped to say hello. We chatted and I said, "I understand you've been on this ship for the last four cruises". She replied, "Yes, that's true." I stated, "I don't understand" and she replied, without a pause, "It's cheaper than a nursing home".

So, there will be no nursing home in my future. When I get old and feeble, I am going to get on a Princess Cruise Ship. The average cost for a nursing home is $200 per day. I have checked on reservations at Princess and I can get a long term discount and senior discount price of $135 per day. That leaves $65 a day for...

1. Gratuities, which will only be $10 per day. And the rest can be put into the slot machines.

2. I will have as many as 10 meals a day if I can waddle to the restaurant, or I can have room service (which means I can have breakfast in bed every day of the week).

3. Princess has as many as three swimming pools, a workout room, free washers and dryers, and shows every night.

4. They have free toothpaste and razors, and free soap and shampoo.

5. They will even treat you like a customer, not a patient. An extra $5 worth of tips and your casino winnings will have the entire staff scrambling to help you.

6. I will get to meet new people every 7or 14 days.

7. T.V. broken? Light bulb need changing? Need to have the mattress replaced? No problem! They will fix everything and apologize for your inconvenience.

8. Clean sheets and towels every day, and you don't even have to ask for them.

9. If you fall in the nursing home and break a hip you are on Medicare; if you fall and break a hip on the Princess ship they will upgrade you to a suite for the rest of your life.

Now hold on for the best! Do you want to see South America, the Panama Canal, Tahiti, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, or name where you want to go? Princess will have a ship ready to go. So don't look for me in a nursing home, just call shore to ship.

P.S. And don't forget, when you die, they just dump you over the side... at no charge.

We recently took our youngest sons' children on a trip to east Tennessee. Above are photos we took while there. Enjoy!
